The early classic Ford Bronco went into production in August of 1965 as the 1966 model year and became an instant hit. The Bronco was a body on frame design with a solid front and rear axle for strength and durability. They came standard with an inline 6-cylinder engine mated to a manual 3-speed transmission.
The Ford 289 V8 and later 302 V8 were available engines as well. In 1973 the C4 automatic transmission was released as an available option. Power was transferred to both the front and rear axles via a manual shift Dana 20 transfer case.
